John Hohl, Associate Director

John holds a Bachelor of Science in Education (BS in Ed) degree from the State University of New York - Fredonia and a Master of Music (MM) degree from Northwestern University in Evanton, IL, where he studied choral music and pipe organ. Mr. Hohl is retired from the US Department of Transportation after 31+ years of federal service.

John is the Associate Director for the Singing Capital Chorus in the DC Chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS). He also serves as Musical Director of the a new, smaller ensemble within the DC Chapter called Capital Assets, which is organized for smaller venues and to augment the full chorus repertoire with specialty numbers.

John Hohl has also directed several barbershop choruses including a third place International finish with the Alexandria (VA) Harmonizers. Other choruses include Fairfax, Richmond, and Fredericksburg, VA and Dundalk and LaPlata MD chapters. In 2006, John received recognition from the Mid-Atlantic District for completing 20 years of service as a front-line director.

Mr. Hohl is a well-known baritone quartet member including two internationally ranked groups - the Nova Chords (two-time bronze medalists) and Vaudeville (1985 Silver Medalist and four time bronze medalists). In Albuquerque, NM in 2003, he won a three-place bronze medal in the International Seniors Quartet Contest with his quartet – Auld Lang Syne and currently sings with AirPower, a new Mid-Atlantic District qualifying quartet from Alexandria, DC and Dundalk chapters.

John is also an accomplished arranger for barbershop quartets and choruses, having written over 200 arrangements. He has several published arrangements in the catalogs of the Barbershop Harmony Society and has composed a few original songs during his career.

Mr. Hohl is a life-member of the Barbershop Harmony Society and has been elected into the Mid-Atlantic District honor club of DELASUSQUEHUDMAC and the Hall of Honor.
